Scidb ("Scidb is a Chess Information Data Base"), a multi-platform, open source chess database and GUI by Gregor Cramer, inspired by Shane Hudson's SCID, but a completely new development, written in Tcl/Tk and C++. Scidb features multiple chess variants, such as Chess960, and supports various file formats besides its native one.

It appears to include a heavily re-written text widget [L1 ]. Excerpt:

The current implementation of tk::text has severe performance problems.
My basis for testing are the Chess Database applications – Scid vs. PC
(a powerful and widely used multi-platform chess toolkit) and,
my own application, Scidb. With the standard tk::text, it can take up to
a few minutes just to display a chess game with a 100 lines.
Based on profiling the following functions are the top performance killer:

TkBTreeGetTags
CleanupLine
TkTextIsElided
TkBTreeCharTagged
TkBTreeTag
TkTextIndexToSeg
TkTextMarkSegToIndex
MeasureUp
MeasureDown
TkTextPixelIndex
