No big new releases, but some more good discussions this week. The Tcl vs. Perl one I think characterized well how level-headed, practical, and reasonable this community is. Such a shame we haven't had a Stallman post in a while... ;-)

  • John Ousterhout fails to dredge up controversy by asking "Why do you hate Perl?" but gets some good arguments for both (thread [2])
  • A Tcl vs. Java thread suggests that Tk plus a package like BWidgets would become a good contender with Java's Swing (thread [3])
  • A public release of Tcl/Tk 8.0.5 seems imminent (thread [4])
  • There was a renewed call for major/minor support in the core (see [5])
  • An good introductory discussion on why scripting can be more reliable than systems programming languages. (thread [6])
  • Andreas Kupries helpfully catalogs the list extensions offered by various packages (see [7])
