Filesystem Hierarchy Standard

The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard is a standard that describes the organisation of files and directories on UNIX-like operating systems.

It describes common location such as /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin etc.

Description

The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard specifies, for example, that executable files such as tclsh, wish, and expect, if intended for system-wide use, should be located in /usr/bin.
