malware is a term designed to describe software intented to cause harm in someway to a machine owner, or at the very least, to make use of said computer without the owner's knowledge or consent.

malware can be as harmless as spying on what the user is doing, sending information about the user's actions to some other site, to something as harmful as deleting files, infecting other machines, and crashing systems or corrupting data.
